Autism- a developmental disability that affects a childs ability to communicate verbally or nonverbally. Usually is evident before age three.
  • Autism has no known cause or treatment. It is very fast growing as well. Degrees of autism also vary. Some children may not speak, others may only have repeated phrases, while others speak well but they don't interpret people's feelings or relate to people, objects, or events.They often have difficulty with changes in routine or plans. Children with autism respond well in a predictable and consistant program.

Hearing impariment- a hearing impairment that may be permanent or fluctuating that affects the child's education.

Mental disabilities- subaverage intellectual functioning

Multiple disabilities- when a child has more than one impairment

Orthopedic impairment- an impairment such as missing limb, caused by disease, or other causes that negativly affects the child's educational performance. If they have a missing limb or other cause of orthopedic impairment it doesn't necessarily mean that they have a disability.

Other health impairment- having limited strength, vitality, or alerness do to chronic health problems. Examples include: leukemia, diabetes, ADD, heart condition, hemophilia, etc.
  • Attention Deficit Disorder is now included in other health impairments. Its symptoms are problems with paying attention, bering very active, and acting before thinking. There are three types: inattentive- where the child can't focus on a task or activity, Hyperactive-Impulsive type- where the person is very active and often acts withouth thinking, and Combined type- where hte person is inattentive, impulsive, and too active.

Tourette's Syndrome- a neurological disorder that includes repetitive involuntary movements or tics. This usually onsets about 7 to 10 years old. Tics could be vocal or involuntary movements.

Emotional Disturbance- Emotional disturbance is marked by these signs: an inability to learn that is not explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors, an inability to have satisfactory relationships with friends or teachers, innappropriate behavior or feelings under normal circumstances, general mood of unhappiness, tendency to develop physical symptoms associated with personal or school problems. These symptoms also must be observed over a long period of time

Specific Learning Disabilities- a basic psychological process that manifests itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do math. It includes perception diabilities, brian injury, dyslexia, and aphasia.
  • Children with learning disabilities often are typically developing children. You can watch for the difference between what a child accomplishes in school and what they should be able to do based on their intellect and ability. They often are very smart but just have problems translating what is in their minds to reading, writing, or math.

Speech or Language impairment- a communication disorder such as stuttering, language impairment, or voice impairment that affects a childs education.

Traumatic Brain Injury- trauma to the brain caused by external forces such as a car crash or fall resulting in total or partial fuctional disability that affects the child's educational performance.

Visual Impairment- visual impairment includes children with partial sight and also blindness

Pervasive developmental disorders- a delay in development whether it be social, language, motor, or cognitive development.
